VitalSigns::O2Saturation
Class OxygenSaturationObservation

“Oxygen saturation is a term referring to the fraction of oxygen-saturated hemoglobin relative to total hemoglobin (unsaturated + saturated) in the blood. The human body requires and regulates a very precise and specific balance of oxygen in the blood. Normal blood oxygen levels in humans are considered 95-100 percent. ... Levels below 80 percent may compromise organ function, such as the brain and heart” – Wikipedia.

This class represents the measurement (or “clinical observation”) of the patient’s blood oxygen saturation level. This class re-defines the generic clinical Observation class to fix the observed characteristic to LOINC 2708-6 and to set the data type of the observation value to a Physical Quantity.

Attributes
«CS» Code oxygenProvisionDeviceQualifier oxygenProvisionDeviceQualifier

If the patient was receiving supplemental oxygen during the time that the patient’s blood oxygen saturation level or respiration rate was measured, this class will indicate what kind of device was being used to administer the oxygen. This information is important to know when interpreting the value of the primary observation. The value of this property is constrained to be one of a set of codes from the SNOMED-CT coding system that categorizes the kind of device that was used to administer supplemental oxygen.

«CS» Code patientStateExertionQualifier patientStateExertionQualifier

Heart Rate, Blood Pressure, Respiration, and Blood Oxygen levels naturally vary depending on whether the patient is at rest, or during or shortly after exercise. This property records an sub-observation of whether the patient was at rest, exercising, or recently had been exercising at the time of the measurement.

«PQ» Quantity supplementalOxygenRateQualifier supplementalOxygenRateQualifier

If the patient was receiving supplemental oxygen during the time that the patient’s blood oxygen saturation level was measured, this property will indicate the amount of supplemental oxygen that the patient was receiving. This information is important to know when interpreting the value of the primary observation, that of the patient’s arterial blood oxygen saturation. Supplemental oxygen is generally expressed in terms of liters (of oxygen flow) per minute. While liters per minute is technically a ratio, this measurement is treated as a simple measurement with the unit of L/min (liters per minute).

«PQ» Quantity value value

This property contains the result, or value of the clinical Observation. In the generic clinical Observation class, the data type for this property can be anything. Blood oxygen saturation is expressed as a percentage of the total hemoglobin that is oxygen-saturated. Therefore, this property has been re-defined to constrain the data type to be a Physical Quantity (where the unit of measure is per cent).
