Class Dosage

This class is used to contain the collective information used to describe how the medication should be taken by the Patient. This information is used by at least two other classes and will likely be used elsewhere. In the past much of this information would have been conveyed in free-form text called a "sig", while the other fields are used to contain those components of the sig in separate fields.
"Indicates how the medication is/was taken or should be taken by the patient." - HL7 FHIR, Dosage
"Describes the medication dosage information details e.g. dose, rate, site, route, etc." - HL7 FHIR, MedicationAdministration.dosage

Attributes
String additionalInstruction additionalInstruction

Contains any special instructions needed for this order. This would include the physician's reason for ordering a PRN.
"Identifies the ordering provider's instructions to the patient or to the provider administering the drug or treatment." - HL7 Version 2.8, RXO-7.
"Supplemental instruction - e.g. "with meals"." - HL7 FHIR, Dosage.additionalInstruction

Boolean asNeeded asNeeded

"Indicates whether the Medication is only taken when needed within a specific dosing schedule (Boolean option), or it indicates the precondition for taking the Medication (CodeableConcept)." - HL7 FHIR, Dosage.asNeeded[x]

«CS» Code bodySite bodySite

"Contains the site of the administration route. When using a post-coordinated code table in this field, (the Adminstration Site Modifier) may be used to modify the meaning of this field." - HL7 Version 2.8, RXR-2
"Contains a modifier which modifies the meaning of (the Adminstration Site code)" - HL7 Version 2.8, RXR-6
"Body site to administer to." - HL7 FHIR, Dosage.site
"Body site where vaccine was administered." - HL7 FHIR, Immunization.site
"A coded specification of the anatomic site where the medication first entered the body. For example, "left arm"." - HL7 FHIR, MedicationAdministration.dosage.site

DoseAndRate doseAndRate doseAndRate

Pointer to "The amount of medication administered." - HL7 FHIR, Dosage.doseAndRate

«CS» Code doseForm doseForm

Dosage form: "A term for the physical characteristics of a drug product - e.g., tablet, capsule or solution - which contains the drug substance and almost invariably other ingredients, such as excipient, fillers, flavours, preservatives, emulsifiers, etc." - Segens Medical Dictionary.
Indicates the form of the material making up a single dose (as opposed to how the dose is packaged). Possible values include Tablet, Drop, Lozenge, Cream, etc. Note that this property is marked as derived, because it may be known from the ordered drug. This property has historically been included in messaging standards because the sender and the recipient may not be using the same (typically proprietary) coding systems. Currently RxNorm would likely be used for inter-organizational communications, in which case the dose form would already be known.
"Indicates the manner in which the treatment is aggregated for dispensing, e.g., tablets, capsules, suppositories." - HL7 Version 2.8, RXO-5.
"Drug form, in a code. Dosage form code. Pharmaceutical Dosage Form." - NCPDP Script (Field 7992, Data Dictionary 201104)

«PQ» Quantity maxDosePerAdministration maxDosePerAdministration

"Upper limit on medication per administration." - HL7 FHIR, Dosage.maxDosePerAdministration

«PQ» Quantity maxDosePerLifetime maxDosePerLifetime

"Upper limit on medication per lifetime of the patient." - HL7 FHIR, Dosage.maxDosePerLifetime

«RTO_PQ» Ratio maxDosePerPeriod maxDosePerPeriod

"The total daily dose being dispensed as expressed in terms of the actual dispense units." - HL7 Version 2.8, RXD-12.
"The total daily dose for this particular pharmaceutical as expressed in terms of actual dispense units." - HL7 Version 2.8, RXE-19.
"Upper limit on medication per unit of time." - HL7 FHIR, Dosage.maxDosePerPeriod

«CS» Code method method

"Identifies the specific method requested for the administration of the drug or treatment to the patient." - HL7 Version 2.8, RXR-4
"Technique for administering medication." - HL7 FHIR, Dosage.method
"A coded value indicating the method by which the medication is intended to be or was introduced into or on the body. This attribute will most often NOT be populated. It is most commonly used for injections. For example, Slow Push, Deep IV." - HL7 FHIR, MedicationAdministration.dosage.method

String patientInstruction patientInstruction

"Instructions in terms that are understood by the patient or consumer." - HL7 FHIR, Dosage.patientInstruction

«CS» Code route route

"This field is the route of administration." - HL7 Version 2.8, RXR-1
"The method of introducing the therapeutic material into or onto the subject." - HL7 Version 3
"How drug should enter body." - HL7 FHIR, Dosage.route
"The path by which the vaccine product is taken into the body." - HL7 FHIR, Immunization.route
"A code specifying the route or physiological path of administration of a therapeutic agent into or onto the patient. For example, topical, intravenous, etc." - HL7 FHIR, MedicationAdministration.dosage.route
"Route of delivery" - PCORnet Common Data Model, Dispensing.Dispense_Route.

Integer sequence sequence

"Indicates the order in which the dosage instructions should be applied or interpreted." - HL7 FHIR, Dosage.sequence

«PQ» Quantity strength strength

"Defines the volume measurement in which the drug strength concentration is contained. For example, Acetaminophen 120 MG/5ML Elixir means that 120 MG of the drug is in a solution with a volume of 5 ML, (this field contains 5)" - HL7 Version 2.8, RXA-23
"Indicates the volumetric unit associated" (with the volume measurement in which the drug strength concentration is contained. For example, Acetaminophen 120 MG/5ML Elixir means that 120 MG of the drug is in a solution with a volume of 5 ML, this field contains ML) - HL7 Version 2.8, RXA-24

String text text

This property contains the dosage instructions as ordered by the prescriber. Also called "sig" which is an abbreviation for either the latin term "signa", which means "write" or "label", or the latin term "signetur", which means "let it be labeled (according to prescription)."
